Anyone who was present at 10.30 mass last week must have been moved by the account of the the difficulties faced by families from the Roma Community in Govanhill. The Daughters of Charity started this project 3 years ago , Margo Epritchard their Project Manger explained that in the past the Roma people belonged to whoever owned the land on which they were camped, they were only defined as "people" 100 years ago! They have never been taught to read or write and nearly all arrive in this country destitute. The aim is to provide the necessary skills to allow the Roma to integrate into society, this means encouraging the children to attend school, to support and educate the mothers and provide them with food, clothing and bedding. At first these items are gifted but very quickly they are asked to make a small payment. The type of items that would be
helpful are underwear, socks, tights, pyjamas and warm jumpers for boys and girls aged between 4 and 11 years old.
All items must be new there is no need to wrap them. The gifts can be placed beside the Jesse tree and will be collected up
until Sunday 17th December.
